The main objective of the SOS-TEMPORALES project is to update and complement the information on biodiversity and conservation of Mediterranean temporary ponds in Catalonia. The project has three main areas: to restore a representative Mediterranean temporary pond that has threatened species and environmental problems, to draw up an inventory of biodiversity and conservation of Mediterranean temporary ponds in Catalonia, and to communicate to society the importance of these ecosystems.
A Mediterranean temporary pond affected by cattle has been restored. The presence of cows in the pond when it is flooded reduce its water quality. To avoid this situation, we have installed a wooden fence and a water trough. This stops the cows from entering the pond, which improves the water quality.
The main aim of the project is to draw up an inventory of Mediterranean temporary ponds in Catalonia, in open access. For this inventory, information will be collected about these ecosystems in Catalonia. It will then be organised and made available to scientific and environmental managers and society.
The third area of the project consists in informing society of the importance of Mediterranean temporary ponds in terms of biodiversity. Various activities have been undertaken in the area, including: recording a video on YouTube, participating in university conferences and congresses, posting reports on the project on social networks and creating a wikiloc itinerary to the restored pond.
The project is being undertaken by the Aquatic Ecologic Research Group of the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment.
